River of Souls

~RIVER OF SOULS~

I walked down by the river,
Dark, cold and somber
I was warned not to venture,
But their reflection called me thither;
Speaking words inaudibly,
As a tear fell silently.
I knew them not,
Yet they felt familiar;
Singing the same story,
Of unspoken misery.
I watched as she walked past me,
And ever so gently,
Lay her burden on the river,
Washing her sin with its water.
With a farewell,
Solemnly,
We watched it float blissfully.
I left her side, unwillingly,
Heart filled with buckets of grief.
As I vowed never to return,
My eyes met those of the fallen soldier.
One look was all it took,
For I was drawn to his hook.
We rode together on his white horse,
Making no stops on our course.
Our hands fit perfectly,
And hearts beat in synchrony.
But as we surrendered,
We forgot,
Love’s bite is but bittersweet.
Our hearts froze and turned to stone,
When you walked into our home.
With innocence, you unearthed,
What truly was hidden within us.
As we faced the truth for the first time,
We faced each other for the last,
And knew it was meant to be.
I find myself back at the river,
Staring at my reflection,
As she calls to me.
I know her not,
Yet she feels familiar.
I wrapped you in blue,
And placed you in woven basket.
Ever so gently,
I lay it on the river;
Singing you a lullaby,
Of unspoken misery.
With a farewell,
Solemnly,
The waves rocked your cradle,
As I washed my sin with its water.
And in that moment,
You became,
Nothing but another,
Floating on the river.
